About 59 Morton
At the end of the 19th century, No. 59 Morton was home to the Girls’ Endeavor Society—a group formed to give support to girls and women who worked for a living. Growing up, 59 Morton was my family home and the place where my memory is so intricately tied to the cultivation of my own personal style. Today, 59 Morton is a style collective and community that inspires women to own and enhance their personal style with creative wardrobe guidance that goes beyond the closet. The name is a homage to where I came from and the notion that we all need support getting from where we are to where we want to be.
cultivating my Style
For as long as I can remember I’ve always been a shopper. My mom tells stories about shopping for me as a very young girl. On her way home from work in Midtown Manhattan, she would swing through her favorite department stores to pick up clothing and accessories. Coming home to 59 Morton Street, she’d lay out the purchases on her bed and watch me survey each piece—touching the fabrics and checking the fit up against my small frame. I never wasted time; according to my Mom, my decisions were always swift and definitive. Even back then, I knew what I liked when I saw it.
As a teenager, my wardrobe came to life as I began to express myself as an individual. I put together outfits comprised of items in my closet, sometimes stealing things out of my mother’s closet, and often borrowing or swapping with girlfriends. If I couldn’t source the perfect piece, I would imagine it living idyllically in “the store in my head”. It was during those years at 59 Morton that I began to cultivate my resourcefulness, creativity, and personal style.
I have relied on these qualities throughout many stages of my adult life—building wardrobes for entry-level jobs out of college and graduate school, as well as higher-level corporate and startup positions from New York City to California. I dress for board meetings and back-to-school nights, family dinners and fancy date nights, walks with my two dogs and runs with girlfriends. Regardless of where I am, I value the importance of looking put together but recognize that, ultimately, true style is reflected from the inside out.
Why Fashion?
To me, fashion is art—it’s beautiful, expressive, and truly transformative. My goal is to provide support to women who are looking to make a connection between who they are on the inside and how they look on the outside. It’s stunning to witness individual transformation and see people’s happiness transcribed through the art of wardrobe—it brings me joy and gives purpose and meaning to my work.
